Classic Callas

This picture was done after a customer asked if I could do calla lilies in a scratchboard technique.

I liked the idea of showing these translucent flowers in a simple black and white motif.  Scratchboard has historically been around since the 19th century, but has become very popular in recent years. It is a masonite board baked with a white clay finish.  India ink is then sprayed over the white surface.  The artist must scratch off the black ink with whatever tools she wishes (my favorite is an exacto knife) to show the white below and form the picture.  The picture is then protected with a special fixative that makes it unnecessary to cover with glass.  The results are stunning.
